Now playing · Frauenkirche, Munich

There's a footprint pressed into the floor of the Frauenkirche, just inside the main entrance.

Stand on it, and the pillars hide every single window.

Legend says the devil stood right here, saw a church without light, and stamped his foot in triumph.

Behind the story

How a street starts talking.

From a dot on the map to a voice in your ear, shown with the Frauenkirche.

  1. Pick the right place.

Out of 8 million, the one ahead of you most worth a story. Ranked by how many Wikipedias cover it, heritage status and visitor ratings.

    Frauenkirche, Munich

The clever builder, however, tricked the devil by positioning columns so that the windows were not visible from the spot at which the devil stood in the foyer.

    Read up on it.

Around two million sources: Wikipedia in dozens of languages, official websites, monument registers and the details in OpenStreetMap.

  3. Stand on it, and the pillars hide every single window.

Visitors have worn the footprint smooth over 500 years.

    Quote the source.

Every story card has to quote the passage it is based on. If that passage is not in the sources, the card is thrown out.

  4. Tell it at the right moment.

The next stories are prepared while you listen. Your phone adds left or right as it plays, even on a train.

Good to know

Is Worldbummlr free?

Yes. Exploring the map, reading stories and listening to the guide are free, in the app and in your browser. A few clearly labelled ads in the app help pay for it.

What happens with my location?

The live guide asks for your location only after you press start, to find the places around you. The Munich demo and the story on this page don’t need it at all. The details are in our privacy policy.

Where do the stories come from?

Worldbummlr writes and narrates its stories with AI, from reference material such as Wikipedia. Story cards link to their sources, so you can check a detail when AI gets one wrong.

Does it work where I live?

Most likely. The map holds more than eight million places worldwide, from cathedrals to corner fountains. The guide speaks English, German and Spanish.

Take the long way home.

There might be a story in it.
